·         20 percent of Americans are functionally illiterate and read below a 5th grade level -- directly impacting on their quality of life, including health care

·         50% have trouble using health information: 90 million adults in US have problems following drug label instructions, understanding hospital consent forms and even doctor's diagnosis and instructions

·         Healthcare is more complicated than ever, and we ALL suffer: Patients, healthcare providers, and  society as a whole
